Inline Mass Flow Meter with Flow Conditioner - FlatTrak™ 780S
/The FlatTrak™ 780S offers improved measurement capabilities in installations where long straight pipe runs are not available. The meter incorporates Sierra’s unique dual-plate flow conditioning element to eliminate velocity profile distortions as well as swirl and temperature stratification in the gas stream. This product reduces piping straight run requirements to as little as three upstream diameters. As a result, you save money on installation costs when compared to an orifice-plate where at least 20 upstream piping diameters are required for optimal performance.

Product Information
The FlatTrak™ 780S offers improved measurement capabilities in installations where long straight pipe runs are not available.
This meter features Sierra's well known Smart Electronics Package (SIP) for field-rangability, field flow-range adjustment, and field validation and diagnostics. The 780S has very low pressure drop, and wide turndown. The FlatTrak™ 780S is hazardous area approved by CSA and CRN (Canada), FM (USA), ATEX, CE and PED (EU), IEC Ex (Australia), GOST R (Russian Federation) and Chinese Pattern Approval (China). The 780S is available in pipe sizes from 1/4-inch to 8-inches in a choice of NPT, Buttweld or ANSI 150 lb. flanged design (300 lb. flanges optional). Larger sizes are available upon request. Meter accuracy is +/ 1% of reading plus +/-0.5% of full scale with repeatability of +/- 0.2% of full scale.
Sierra’s digital communications solutions offer engineers and systems integrators, full industrial system integration and networking capability with Sierra's thermal mass flow meters. Digital communications solutions include: Foundation Fieldbus, HART, Modbus RTU, and Profibus DP. This flexibility of communication features offers turnkey solutions for integration of Sierra's thermal mass flow meters into any industrial automation system or application.
Sierra has certified the 780S thermal mass flow meter for Greenhouse Gas (GHG) measurement meeting all requirements defined by the EPA (40 CFR Part 98). This product is optimized for highly accurate and repeatable mass flow measurement of methane (CH4) as well as N20, SF6, HFC’s, PFC’s and CO2 as called out in the EPA mandate. Sierra has long supplied its 780S to gas and electrical producers around the world. With its built-in Dual-Plate flow conditioning element, the 780S is an ideal meter for measuring gas flow in cramped or constrained piping environments where long straight pipe runs simply do not exist. The 780S is routinely used by gas and power plants to measure methane to compressors, pre-heaters, boilers and other process equipment.
Operating Principle
Sierra’s unique Steel-Trak™ sensor probe is responsible for the unsurpassed accuracy, ruggedness and reliability of Sierra industrial flow meters. The immersible Steel-Trak sensor consists of two sensing elements–a velocity sensor and a temperature sensor that automatically corrects for changes in gas temperature.
When power is applied to the flow meter, the transducer electronics heats the velocity sensor to a constant temperature differential above the gas temperature and measures the cooling effect of the gas flow. The electrical power required to maintain a constant temperature differential is directly proportional to the gas mass flow rate.
Both sensors are reference-grade platinum resistance temperature detectors (RTDs). The platinum RTD wire is wound on a rugged ceramic mandrel for strength and stability. Steel-Trak sensors are, clad in a rugged, sealed 316 stainless steel encasement.
